ACADEMIC / PUBLICATIONS

Michael is one of the leading academic Orthopedic surgeons. He is a Professor in Trauma and Orthopedics at the University of Bristol, one of the foremost musculoskeletal research units in the country. He holds 3 University degrees (PhD, MSc and a BSc) in addition to his medical degree (MB ChB) and fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is lead for Trauma and Emergency Care research in the West of England and UK representative for Basic Science Research and Teaching to the main European Trauma and Orthopaedic Society.

He has published a very large number of academic research papers (over 200) and currently averages more than 30 papers per year. He publishes in leading world journals, such as The Lancet and BMJ with a focus on what interventions work for patients, the risks they need to know about and how long interventions can be expected to last. He is one of the listed authors of the Annual Reports of the National Joint Registry for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man and leads the statistical analysis for the NJR. This is one of the most important annual publications in Orthopaedics, describing the outcome and treatment of patients from the world’s largest joint registry. He is co-editor of one of the landmark Orthopaedic Textbooks, Apley & Solomon’s System of Orthopaedics and Trauma and its smaller companion quick reference text, Apley and Solomon’s Concise System of Orthopaedics and Trauma.

Michael is invited to talk at a wide variety of national and international conferences. He is a member of faculty for courses and conferences including the Bristol Hip Arthroplasty Course, the British Orthopaedic Association and the European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. He delivers, on average, 20 talks at such conferences per year.

Michael has a wide portfolio of research and as lead investigator or supervisor has received over £5.5 million in grant income. He has received over £9.5 million as a co-applicant, part of a wider team to deliver practice changing research. Funded studies include first-in-human studies of new treatments designed to improve patient care, researching joint replacement procedures, outcomes of surgery, the treatment of infection, hip fractures, ankle fractures and many more. He currently sits as chair or member on the trial steering or data monitoring committees for 4 major national multicentre trials. His research and teaching has been recognised with a number of prestigious prizes and awards.

His passion for teaching has led to him co-developing a Master’s level programme in Orthopaedics, which he currently co-directs. He also led on the development of the Orthopaedic component of the new medical school curriculum in Bristol. Along with colleagues, he set up the largest national course in minor surgery for GPs and a national musculoskeletal update day for GPs. He directly supervises up to 5 doctoral students at any one time, usually Orthopaedic trainee surgeons carrying out their own PhDs or MDs. In 2021, he was appointed as the Head of School for Clinical Academic Training for the University of Bristol and the Severn Deanery (Health Education England), this is a major role with responsibility for over 90 clinical academic trainees in the region.
